We would first like to acknowledge that this event is taking place on unceded Indigenous lands. We are on the traditional territory of the Kanien’keha:ka (Ga-niyeon-ge-haa-ga). This island that we call Montreal is known as Tiohtiá:ke (Joh-jah-gae) in the language of the Kanien’keha:ka and has historically served as a meeting place for other Indigenous nations, which today, is home to a diverse population of peoples. We acknowledge the continued connections with this colonialist past as reflected in the present ongoing experiences of Indigenous peoples within the Montreal community. We believe it is crucial to be informed on past and ongoing consequences of colonialism, and we encourage everyone to learn about the history of the land we live on. We also acknowledge that the McGill University downtown campus is situated on the former enslaver James McGill’s Burnside estate, in which he enslaved Black and Indigenous Peoples. We support and center community efforts of advancing truth and reconciliation for and with Black and Indigenous Peoples based on respect, dignity, trust, and cooperation.
